Thinking about getting started with Art of Smart?

Richard and his daughter Cassandra (Year 12) have been working with Art of Smart for just under 12 months for HSC General Maths.

We recently chatted to Richard who shared his experiences in working with Art of Smart and the impact it’s had for Cassandra.

Prior to getting started with Art of Smart, what help was Cassandra needing?

Cassandra is very strong in her Humanities (Arts, English and Drama), but Maths was an area she was weak in and it was easily her worst subject.

Cassandra wants to study Clinical Psychology so improving her Maths results was important, so we decided she needed additional support to get where she needed to be.

Why did you ultimately choose Art of Smart?

I did a Google search on tutoring and found Art of Smart. I then spoke to one of the Art of Smart team and liked what I heard and the feel I got from the discussion and thought I would give Art of Smart a go!

Even though we have lots of mathematically able people in our family, we needed someone who had the time to really dedicate and bring in specialist tutor to focus just on her and her Maths.

I discussed with Art of Smart that I was looking for a young lady to work with my daughter 1 on 1 as I thought the dynamic would be better. Fiona from Art of Smart recommended Praby who appeared to fit what we were needing so we got started!

What was the moment in working with Art of Smart that you knew you’d made the right decision? Why? What did we do?

For tutoring to be successful you need to have a tutor who has three things:

1. Technical competency so they need to know their subject matter.

2. The ability to teach so they can communicate the content clearly.

3. A good personal relationship with a certain level of rapport between student and teacher.

If you have all three of these you get outstanding results from tutoring but you need the combination all three!

Praby and Cassandra hit it off like a house on fire, and this relationship fostered a great learning dynamic between the two of them! Praby also had fantastic content knowledge and was an effective teacher, and this meant in this particular case we had all three operating at a high order which produced fantastic results for Cassandra!

What have we done to help Cassandra with this?

Cassandra banished me from the sessions! She enjoyed the privacy with Praby – it meant she could relax without the pressure of her family watching over her shoulder. She could feel comfortable asking questions which was key to helping her.

Praby showed up each week when she was meant to. She was reliable, punctual, polite and always well presented!

What’s the best thing your tutor has done to support your child?

Overall the best thing has been seeing the transformation in Cassandra’s results!

She went from Maths being by far her worst subject, to one of her Top 2 subjects! And this is for someone who is very very strong in Humanities!

She would find that when she wanted to relax from her Humanities work, she would pull out her Maths and work on it. She’d say, “I need to relax now, I’m going to work on some Maths!”.
