Everything You Should Do as Part of Your Exam Morning Routine

So it is the day of the reckoning. Have you got an exam morning routine to get you feeling at ease?

On the morning of the exam, you might say to your friends that you ‘don’t care anymore’ but inside, you’re freaking out worse than ever. Or you might be doing what I used to do — going around telling anyone who’ll listen how anxious you are!

But stop! Doing either of these things is not very helpful for your mindset and the reason for that is that you are inevitably wounding yourself up even more.

That’s why you need an exam morning routine to help you remain calm and confident for your exam!

Exam Morning Routine

Step 1: Eat a healthy breakfast
Step 2: Get to the examination venue early
Step 3: Don’t think about what you don’t know
Step 4: Be confident
Step 5: Read over your notes one last time
Step 6: Surround yourself with the optimistic kind
Step 7: Give yourself a pep talk

Step 1: Eat a healthy breakfast

An essential part of your exam morning routine is eating a hearty and healthy breakfast – because who can think on an empty stomach, let alone take an exam!

Try eating food which is high in carbs but low in sugar, such as muesli, oats, or whole grain bread which release energy slowly. This will sustain you through the entirety of your exam.

Step 2: Get to the examination venue early

Waking up early and getting yourself to the exam venue at least a half an hour before the start time of your exam will give you the chance to adapt to the environment.

This will help you relax just a bit more than getting there huffing and puffing seconds before the exam is scheduled to begin.

Step 3: Don’t think about what you don’t know

So you don’t know your texts back to front. But you know your techniques, you also know your key quotes, you also have mad essay writing skills.

If you find yourself thinking about everything you don’t know, immediately switch your thoughts to things that you do know. This will help you feel more prepared.

Step 4: Be confident

A large part of you exam morning routine should be having confidence in your ability to perform well.

Walk with your back straight, your chin high and your face resolute. This might seem like a useless exercise but it actually works.

Step 5: Read over your notes one last time

Scanning your notes one last time before your exam will make you remember the most important bits.

But this only applies if you’ve got pre-made notes that you have been through quite a lot times previously.

If you think reading over your textbook the morning of your exam is a good idea, then you are terribly mistaken — read your own notes as part of your exam morning routine!

Step 6: Surround yourself with the optimistic kind

There are always going to be people who are going to say that they are going to fail just before the exam and then they end up getting the highest mark in the grade.

Don’t be around those kind of people. Their sole purpose is to make everyone feel incapable and just before your exam, you don’t need that kind of negativity in your head.

Step 7: Give yourself a pep talk

I’m the best! I can do it! I am going to ace it!

Whatever pep talk works for you, use it to affirm the notion that you know your stuff regardless of whether you know it or not.

Positive self-talk will make you feel in control and that you can get the job done!

Now, be calm and confident during your exam morning routine to help you ace that exam!

Mansahaj Kaur completed her HSC in 2015 and now studies Bachelor of Commerce and Laws at USyd. She thinks that English is the most versatile and loveable language on planet Earth and she loves dabbling in anything English related, writing included. But then again, this could be because she hasn’t learnt French or German or Japanese yet. But it’s on her bucket list, mind you! Her desire to learn another language or two is only matched by her passion for eclectic tones and mystery dramas- yes yes, Sherlock, too. She is an avid reader and writer, her favourite series still being Harry Potter, despite her having read numerous renowned classics. Mansahaj likes to think that by becoming a lawyer, she might be able to make a slight, small-as-your-pinkie, teensy difference in the world; but that could be wishful thinking!
